Strong odor that we get when we open a can of paint can give headache to some of us. Its from chemicals called volatile organic compounds (VOCs), some of which have been linked to cancer.
Now more and more paint companies are developing low- and no-VOC paints.
What is VOC
VOCs can be found in paints, as well as in cleaning products. Not only do these products emit strong odors, but exposure to some VOCs can, in the short term, cause irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat, dizziness, and nausea. Some VOCs (including formaldehyde and benzene) are known carcinogens and/or may lead to organ damage. Many paint manufacturers offer low VOC interior paints. “low-VOC” paints are considered those with fewer than 50 grams of VOCs per liter.
Before buying check the label for common VOCs including toluene, xylene, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, and ethyl acetate.
While Choosing the Base
When selecting a coating, consider its base,a key giveaway for VOC content. Water-based, paints will have lower levels of VOC than oil-based paints, with low-VOC and VOC-free options being best for air quality.
